Chooo Chooo! Some of our guests have been upset upon hearing the train at 6 a.m. Truth is, there is nowhere in Seward you can stay where you won't hear the train. Seward is a narrow town, perched on the Bay with mountains behind it, and the train tracks run smack up the middle. We think it is a beautiful sound, because it bounces around the mountains. Click here for an aerial photo. Try to enjoy the sound -- it is, after all, the famous Alaska Railroad. (And the tracks are not close enough to our house to rattle it... take a look a the photo.) Traffic - We are in a neighborhood a few miles outside of the Seward downtown area. We are not in a remote, wilderness location. We do have traffic on our road, which surprises some of our guests. Occasionally, a teenager will vrooom his engine in front of our Bed and Breakfast. If you wish to experience complete wilderness (i.e., no motorized vehicles), Seward and its surrounding neighborhoods is not the place to come. Try a fly-in to a bush community instead. But then, you'll miss out on all the lovely things that Seward has to offer (mountains, Resurrection Bay, the Kenai Fjords, Exit Glacier and the Harding Ice Field, fine dining, shopping, hikes for everyone, and so on). Early Arrival or Late Check-Out. Because it is very important that we clean rooms to our highest standards, we need the full seven hours per day available to us to prepare rooms and suites for new guests. Therefore, we are unable to offer Early Arrival or Late Check-Out. Please check in no sooner than 5 p.m. and please check out promptly at 10 a.m. Thank you for understanding. Kitchen - Our kitchen is not available for guests to use. However, we do provide a large refrigerator downstairs exclusively for guests, and the guest common area is set up with your needs in mind. There is a microwave, continual hot water for tea, wine and highball glasses, ice and other items to ensure your comfort. Feel free to snack in the dining area or on the lovely deck, or cook your own dinner on the grill over the fire pit in the back yard. There are also bay front picnic areas with grills in downtown Seward. (If you really need a kitchen, consider booking our Aurora Suite, which has a complete and fully stocked kitchen.) Light at Night - It is very difficult to block all light from a room without hanging those heavy, lined draperies that you often find in hotel rooms. We really do not want to hang such heavy draperies in our rooms. But we do have pull-down shades that block some light. You might also want to use an eye mask. Consider booking Blueberry Room, which is our "darkest" room. Aurora Suite is also darker at night because it is on the lower level. Internet Access - For your convenience, we have a laptop in a common area that you may use to check your email or browse the Internet. We request no uploading of files (such as photographs) as it incurs higher charges for us from our Internet Service Provider. We do not broadcast our connection, which means your laptop will not be able to receive Internet access while here. If you need to access the Internet on your own laptop, there are several places in downtown Seward that offer free Wi-Fi. Storage of Luggage and Fish - We do not have space to store luggage prior to your check-in or after your check-out. There are places in Seward to store luggage. We do not have a lot of freezer space to store your fish. There are places in Seward that will store your fish. Transportation - We do not provide transportation. Please call one of the local taxi cab companies. Rain - We live in a rain forest. So it rains a lot here. Bring a raincoat and rainpants! Moose and Bear - Many guests are disappointed at the lack of apparent wildlife. The moose are abundant here in the winter, but in the summer they go uphill. It's rare to see one. Bears are around in the summer, and occasionally you'll spot one along our creek. If you really want to see bears, hike the Harding Ice Field. Also, going into Denali Park is a guarantee of seeing wildlife. Elevator - We don't have one. Instead, we have stairs. Aurora Suite is located downstairs (lower level), Salmonberry is located on the main floor (still requires six steps up to the front door), and the rest of the rooms are up a full flight of stairs. We hope our honesty has been informative and helpful. Remember, if you choose to stay here, you are staying at one of the finest Bed and Breakfasts in Alaska. We have a reputation for being friendly and gracious, exceptionally clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. We also are repeatedly told that our breakfasts are superb; we strive to offer a variety of foods in an elegant and tasty fashion. |
